Bonfire night came early in the village of Allington with over 400 residents, family and friends enjoying a spectacular evening at The Old Rectory on November 4th that raised £1100 for village funds. Inspired by the recent final of the Great British Bake-off, the Community Partnership and volunteers had built a bonfire in the shape of a four-tier birthday cake. Ingredients included 1100 pallets, two garden sheds, a dismantled chalet and 10 tons of loose timber. In all, the bonfire stood 28ft high and weighed about 55 tons.
Spectators enjoyed burgers and mulled wine and a fire lighting ceremony that saw three village bakers offering over 100 children free cup cakes. Then came the appearance of Bonfire Man to light the candles on the cake and start the bonfire burn. The evening closed with a spectacular firework display from Smart Pyrotechnics.
